Activity Groups

A variety of activities, including outdoor recreation, skill-building workshops, & volunteer-based service learning

These groups may include anything from blacksmithing to permaculture work days, wood-chopping, crafting, and career education. Participants enjoy new experiences, and connecting with community members and an array of mission-driven organizations.

  • Crafting Passages

Journeymen collaborates with the Asheville City Schools Foundation for its In Real Life After-School Program to provide unique after-school program opportunities for boys in middle school.

During these Crafting Passages, we work with power tools to help our J-Men develop carpentry skills, which gives them a sense of capability and an experience of accomplishment.

  • Rites of Passage

Intentional rites of passage have played an important role in many cultures for thousands of years, as a way to safely challenge young men and boys to consciously explore the men they wish to be. These experiences can be incredibly empowering for our mentees as they transition into adulthood.

Participants not only have fun with each other and our mentors, but also discover new ways to apply themselves in the “real world” by expanding their idea of what’s possible for their lives and how they can apply themselves.

Our Partnerships

In the past, Journeymen has partnered with MountainTrue, Long Branch Environmental Education Center and the University of North Carolina Asheville for our activity-based programming.

In addition, we would like to thank sponsors, such as the Asheville Area Arts Council and Buncombe County for sponsoring events like our chair-building workshops.

Having said that, we invite any community members and organizations that are interested in sharing your talents and skills with us as an artist, craft professional, sports coach, or other relevant abilities as a partnership to contact us for more information.
