In School Mentoring

Where Did the Men Go?

Today, fewer than 1 in 4 K–12 teachers are men.

For millions of boys, this means something quiet—but profound—is missing.

Boys are growing up without daily contact with grounded, emotionally present male role models who understand how boys move, play, struggle, compete, and learn.

They rarely see men who model calm authority, healthy boundaries, emotional strength, and respectful masculinity inside the classroom—the very place where their character is shaped daily .

Instead, many boys learn that their energy is a problem.
Their curiosity is a distraction.
Their physicality is something to suppress.

The absence of male educators doesn’t just affect academic performance—it shapes identity, confidence, discipline, and a boy’s sense of belonging in the world.

Boys need to be seen by men.
They need to feel understood by men.
They need to learn from men how to become men.

At Journeymen, we are bringing back healthy male role modeling to our public schools.

Blending play with meaningful group discussion, teen boys connect, self-reflect, and explore who they are and consider the kind of men they aspire to become.

We are currently in nearly every middle school in Buncombe county and emerging into high schools, providing a critical role to support male teenagers during their most formative years to become the best they can be.

If your son could thrive from positive male mentoring, reach out to your school administrator today to see if Journeymen is an option.
