Activity Groups involve a host of activities, including outdoor recreation, skill-building workshops, volunteer-based service learning, and rites of passage weekends.
Activity Groups may include everything from blacksmithing to permaculture work days, wood-chopping, crafting, and career education.
These groups expose our participants to new experiences, community members, and an array of mission-driven organizations.
Journeymen collaborates with the Asheville City Schools Foundation for its In Real Life After-School Program to provide unique after-school program opportunities for boys in middle school.
During these Crafting Passages, we work with power tools to help our J-Men develop carpentry skills, which gives them a sense of capability and an experience of accomplishment.
Intentional rites of passage have played an important role in many cultures for thousands of years, as a way to safely challenge young men and boys to consciously explore the men they wish to be.
These experiences can be incredibly empowering for our mentees as they transition into adulthood, making them one of the most important parts of our program.
Our next Rites of Passage Adventure Weekend is October 25-27, 2024.

Through our Activity Groups, participants not only have fun with each other and our mentors, but also discover new ways to apply themselves in the “real world” by expanding their idea of what’s possible for their lives and how they can apply themselves.
Our Partnerships
In the past, Journeymen has partnered with MountainTrue, Long Branch Environmental Education Center and the University of North Carolina Asheville for our activity-based programming.
In addition, we would like to thank sponsors, such as the Asheville Area Arts Council and Buncombe County for sponsoring events like our chair-building workshops.
Having said that, we invite any community organizations that are interested in mentoring program partnerships to contact us for more information.
